Marching Band

Fresh from a World Premiere at Locarno International Film Festival, Claude Miller’s documentary Marching Band was filmed during the last three months of the presidential election campaign. Airing the hopes and dreams of young America, the film follows student musicians at the University Of Virgina, one of the country’s elite institutions, and the historically African-American Virginia State University.

Obama’s election. Ballot box drama. That’s what Marching Band is really about, a portrait of young American voters: an electorate that made history. We’re three months away from the presidential elections, the campaign is in full flow. On university campuses, students feel involved like never before. And especially those who play in the marching bands – the famous American college parade bands, local amateur curiosities which demand extraordinary levels of commitment. Director Claude Miller plants his cameras amidst these young, educated, outspoken and disciplined players, most of whom are first-time voters. This film does not fall into hagiography, it does not seek to instruct, it is simply a lucid study of young America, the ubiquitous yet somehow overlooked majority. A yearning for change turns their favourite candidate into an idealised champion. Obama the idol, Obama the superhero, Obama the messiah. Without ever directly posing the question, Miller airs a crushing thought - what if he doesn’t win? But for these budding musicians there is no room for doubt, idealism is back in fashion. The ‘no future’ generation allows itself to dream…
